OSHA 3015 - Excavation, Trenching, and Soil Mechanics

Dates: March 5-7, 2019

Meets: Tu, W and Th from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

This course covers the OSHA Excavation Standard and safety and health aspects of excavation and trenching. Course topics include practical soil mechanics and its relationship to the stability of shored and unshored slopes and walls of excavations, introduction of various types of shoring (wood timbers and hydraulic), soil classification, and use of protective systems. Testing methods are demonstrated and students participate in workshops in the use of instruments such as penetrometers, torvane shears, and engineering rods. Upon course completion, students will have the ability to assess their employer’s compliance with the OSHA Excavation Standard, utilize soil testing methods to classify soil types, determine protective systems for excavation operations, and training
requirements.

Class will end at approximately 2PM on Thursday Special Instructions: This class does include a site visit. Please bring boots, safety glasses, hard-hats and reflective vest. Other than boots, if you are unable to bring these items, we will provide. Thanks.

Randy Shaw

www.osha.eku.edu Randy Shaw has over 35 years of safety expertise and has been employed by various companies in the areas of General Industry and Construction, Refining, Mining, and Maritime Industries. He has experience as an adjunct faculty instructor, lockout/tagout, confined space entry, OSHA compliance and regulatory standards, and incident investigations, among others.

Mr. Shaw holds professional certifications as a Certified Safety Professional and a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager at the senior level. Mr. Shaw is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, and the American Waterways Organization. He holds a B.S. in Industrial Security and Safety from Eastern Kentucky University and an M.S. in Safety Management from Marshall University. He joined the EKU OSHA Training Institute Education Center in 2011.
